aa >> jim, on the campaign trail, governor romney today more energized? >> absolutely. we were with him on his campaign plane during the day and as he got on the plane, he was smiling, he was laughing with his campaign staff. there was a spring in his step. there was an air of confidence in this campaign that i haven't seen in several weeks and in talking to senior romney advisor eric fehrnstrom, he said to me if this was a prize fight, they would have stopped the fight. that's how well they think mitt romney did. they're not going to be taking their foot off the gas pedal, i can tell you that the romney campaign came to the back of the plane just as it was landing here in virginia earlier this afternoon. they were starting to sense that the story, the narrative was starting to change from sort of a post-debate high for mitt romney to this new counter-offensive from the president going after some of the statements that mitt romney made during this debate. they came back to the back of the plane as the plane was landing and i asked ed gillespie, a senior romney advisor,

with more on that tonight in the "ridiculist." 8 joining us from the campaign trail, jim acosta with the romney campaign and jessica yellin is in madison, wisconsin with the obama campaign. are the obama campaign at least off the record admitting it was not a good night for the president, putting it mildly. we've heard a lot of spin. do they believe that spin? >> they will say on the record it was not a good night for the president, yes. they say they will adjust going forward. here's one way they will adjust, i think. you know, the president's biggest asset they believe is his likability, and they want to protect that at all costs but one of the ways they have to do that, it seems they thought was to preserve it by keeping him from going on the attack. that meant he didn't defend his policies enough and that meant that he didn't challenge mitt romney enough. and it came across badly last night. so the challenge for the president is what al gore faced in 2000, where one time he held it back too much, he overcorrected in the second debate and came across as too aggressive, missed the

i have to bring jim into this conversation as well because one of the things we're also get, jim, taking a look at all the economic data, we have to remind everybody this number does look backwards on september. we're already in october. it is reflecting the past a little bit. we saw the gdp number that showed we're growing barely over 1% as far as the entire economy. is 7.8% like a great number? i mean in quote, unquote, normal times would we look 7.8% and say, hey, that is a pretty good number or in comparison looking a lot better than the last several years? >> well, it's looking a lot better than the last several years. 7.8 is a great number if you're coming down. and not a great number if you're going up in the wrong direction. jenna: great point. >> obviously, we want the economy to do better but i do think this is a broadly positive report and one of the numbers i think is very underreported is the increase in the hourly work week. it is now up to 34.5 hours per week. that is at the number it was at prerecession. that is the peak that it ever gets. when you get higher than that nu
